Entry level models - TC20 and TC25
Introducing the Zebra TC20 / 25, the smallest and simplest of the Zebra portable data terminals. The device visually resembles a robust smartphone in a sturdy body (dimensions 7.31 x 13.4 cm, 1.6 cm thick), but with additional buttons on the side.
The manufacturer's latest equipment already comes with an IP65 durability (so dust and waterproof) enclosure, a capacitive multi-touch Corning Gorilla 4.3-inch screen with WVGA (800x480) resolution sufficient for most business applications. If you fall into the hands of a pre-2019 machine, count on the IP54 enclosure. The devices have been tested to withstand falls from a height of 1.2 meters, and can operate from -10 to +50 degrees Celsius.
At the top of the case is a 1D / 2D barcode scanner hidden behind the screen. As is customary in telephone format data terminals, there are yellow scanning buttons on both sides of the casing. There are also additional volume buttons on the right side and push-to-talk buttons on the left. At the top, next to the scanner, you'll find the power button on the device, and at the bottom of the device, the USB charging jack and docking station mounts.
At the back of the unit is an 8MP autofocus camera, which will be faint in artistic scenery but will be fully sufficient for business process photography. Hidden behind the cover is a powerful 3000Mah battery that will allow up to 10 hours of use, while the battery manufacturer promises full charge in 4h.
The latest generation of TC20 / TC25 devices starting in 2019 comes with Android 8.1 Oreo operating system. This version of Android is specifically tailored to business needs, has LTS support from Google, and comes with specific business-specific functionality such as curbing employee profiles and remote management.
Why has Zebra released two model series - the TC20 and the TC25? In simple terms, the main difference is the existence of a SIM card slot. You also want to use the machine as a phone - choose the TC25, but if you plan to use the data terminal with only a Wi-Fi connection, the TC20 model will work for you.
The main function of the machine is barcode tracking - such as inventory of fixed assets, acceptance and issue of packaging of goods, and others - so we look at the TC20 / TC25 in this area. The built-in scanner is fast that accurately reads the offered 1D and 2D bar codes, regardless of orientation. Built-in illumination, which emits a point or area in the direction of the target - makes it much easier to read what is needed between closely spaced barcodes. Android also comes with the Zebra application - Datawedge - which allows you to read barcodes and feed them into a web application without the need for additional programming.
The side scan buttons are not really suited for heavy barcode reading, they have two options - a pistol grip as an accessory (a relatively expensive component), or one of the portable data terminal models that are specifically designed for intensive warehouse work, such as the Zebra MC33 or TC80.
